We happily announce the recipients of the Flute Specialists of Michigan scholarships to the Robert Dick Contemporary Flute Week at Wildacres Retreat in Little Switzerland, North Carolina, June 27 – July 3. Flute Specialists is delighted to support the Robert Dick Contemporary flute Week with two $250 scholarships. Candidates were required to submit a short statement and also a video of their playing.
Sarah Curtiss is going into her second year of her Master of Music in flute performance at Bowling Green State University where she is the flute teaching assistant. Sarah graduated with her Bachelor of Music summa cum laude from the University of North Dakota. While at UND, she was named the Presser Scholar for the 2019-2020 academic year and was selected as a concerto soloist wind the UND Wind Ensemble. In 2018-2019, She was selected as a member of the Red River Trio – an annually selected trio that performs frequently in the Greater Grand Forks community culminating in a performance and teaching tour in Japan. In 2019, she was one of the winners of the NFA Collegiate Flute Choir Competition and performed on flute and piccolo at the convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. Originally from North Dakota, Sarah has substituted regularly with local symphony orchestras and won the piccolo position for the Fargo Moorhead Symphony Orchestra for the 2019-2020 season. In 2018, she won the Bismarck-Mandan and Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competitions and interned at National Flute Association Convention in Orlando, Florida. Her primary teachers are Jeffery Zook and Lisa Bost-Sandberg.
Juan Daniel Salazar Posada is a Colombian flutist, composer, and educator who specializes in extended techniques, improvisation, solo and chamber music repertoire. He is a founder member of Agathos Duet (flute & guitar) playing Latin American repertoire, and the Juan Daniel Salazar Jazz Trio, playing his own compositions. Focusing mainly on solo flute repertoire for the past few years, Juan is currently in the pursuit of recording his first album, and publishing his own works.
