Broken Pieces starts on a unison B-flat before slowly expanding out into dissonant harmonies, adding alto flute and lastly bass flute before leading to an alto flute solo. The piece begins reflective and mournful before moving forward to a brighter middle section, developing through D Major to E Major. The piece devolves and slowly collapses back to the original key, with a peaceful and mysterious ending that ends a chord implying a ray of sunshine.
