I once heard it said that “without the flutes, the orchestra couldn’t sparkle.” Perhaps that’s why the idea of writing a collection of flute and piano duets for Christmas has long been on my mind. The Christmas season is certainly filled with sparkle, from the glittery decorations and festive lights, to the joyful strains of our favorite carols that extol joy to the world and peace on earth.
This collection of classic Christmas favorites, arranged in a variety of styles, is written for players who are looking for more than just a trip through the carol playing the melody. I tried to make them interesting enough for the advanced player to enjoy while being within reach of the more modestly advanced player. The piano accompaniments are also fully developed, making these pieces useful not only for worship services but for concerts and recitals as well.
Christmas Joy and Christmas Angels are medleys written in a bubbly, classical style. Silent Night and O Little Town of Bethlehem are romantic ballads, while It Came upon the Midnight Clear is a soulful, jazzy setting. Go, Tell It on the Mountain, written in a rousing gospel style, rounds out the collection.
Many thanks to my engraver Judy Nishimura for her help and advice. Not only an excellent notesetter but a very fine flute player as well, she kept me on my toes and made invaluable suggestions and contributions to the flute parts.
As you enjoy the most blessed time of the year, I hope these arrangements add a little joy and sparkle to your Christmas. -Joel Raney
