One of the simplest and most popular secular carols is We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Conjuring up images of ancient English waits and crisp, cold nights of festive revelry, this music seems to be the very essence of holiday merrymaking. It is with this sense of jollity and good humour that these not-so-serious variations should be performed.
Although originally written for flute trio, this music can be readily and easily adapted for the flute choir. Greater dynamic and colour contrasts can be made (not to mention opportunities for players to experience solo work) by assigning some passages to be played one on a part.
